Autumn 1

Religious Education (R.E.) –

We will start the year by learning about our school patron saint – St. Joseph and go on to learn about our class saints:  St Peter and St. Josephine Bhakita.

Our first RE unit focusses on ‘Creation and the Story of Abraham to Joseph’. We will learn the story of Creation in detail, consider what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God and study some of the stories from the Old Testament.

Next we think about ‘Jesus Teaches us how to pray.’ In this unit the children will learn about the prayer life of Jesus as he grew up in the Jewish faith. The children will be introduced to some prayers from the Old Testament and they will consider the importance Jesus attached to prayer. The children will study the Our Father, the prayer of the Rosary and some other forms of prayer as part of this unit.

Reading Into Writing –

This half term our shared class reading will be from the book ‘Who Let the Gods Out’ by Maz Evans.

 

We will work on developing our comprehension skills by focusing on Vocabulary,

Inference, Prediction, Explanation and Summarising in our reading.

In our Writing we will be exploring narrative writing by retelling parts of our text with a focus on the sentence structures including:

  • Expanded noun phrases
  • Conjunctions
  • Fronted Adverbials
  • Speech

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar – 

 

In spellings we will be learning and practising homophones and the letter patterns ei, sc, gue/que and ch.

 

During the first four weeks of term, our grammar and punctuation focus will be further developing our understanding of nouns and verbs and sentence structures through the Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar course.

Maths –

Numbers to 10 000

 In this chapter, pupils will learn to count in multiples of 25, 100 and 1000 in order to count larger numbers comprehensively. They will learn about the relative size of numbers and complete number sequences within 10 000. Pupils will learn about place value to 4 digits and they will link numbers in numerals and in words. They will compare numbers using language such as 'greater', 'smaller', 'less' and 'more', using the mathematical symbols >, < and =. They will use their knowledge of number and place value to help complete number patterns. They will also learn about rounding numbers to the nearest 1000, 100 and 10; children will apply this knowledge to approximate, total and find the difference.

Addition and Subtraction

In the second half of the half term, our focus changes to Addition and Subtraction within 10 000.

History -

The Ancient Greeks.

This half term we are learning all about Ancient Greece. We will be exploring the city-states, government, battles, beliefs and key figures such as Alexander the Great.  

Science –

Ecosystems

Our Science for this half term is 'Ecosystems'.  Children will be learning about what an ecosystem is and how to classify the diets of animals. They will learn how to construct and interpret a food chain/web as well as understand what can cause disruptions to them. 

Physical Education (P.E.)

Children will need their PE kit in school on Mondays and Fridays: red round-necked PE top, navy shorts, plain black pumps. 

This half term in PE we are studying invasion games focusing on football and basketball. Children will develop skills such as passing, shooting and dribbling in isolation and progress into small sided games with an emphasis placed on teamwork, understanding of the games rules and demonstrating good sporting values. 

French –

Portraits

This half term the children will be learning adjectives for describing people’s physical appearance and their personality. Creating simple sentences ensuring that the adjectives agree with the gender of the noun. They will look at various artists and famous art galleries in France.

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) – 

During PSHE this half term we will be focusing on:

Class rules, Our school mission statement, British values, Understanding Catholic social teaching about family and community, Keeping safe online, The celebration of Harvest where we give thanks for food we eat, How to care for the world we live in and our environment, The positive contributions made by significant black people through History.

Computing –

Computing systems and networks – The Internet

Learners will apply their knowledge and understanding of networks, to appreciate the internet as a network of networks which need to be kept secure. They will learn that the World Wide Web is part of the internet, and will be given opportunities to explore the World Wide Web for themselves in order to learn about who owns content and what they can access, add, and create. Finally, they will evaluate online content to decide how honest, accurate, or reliable it is, and understand the consequences of false information.

Art / DT – 

Out Art project for this half term is creating decorative tiles.

Music –

We are working at developing our confidence with playing solo sections from pieces of music. Live and recorded music will be played to the class. They will be asked to recall details of the performance they have just heard, to include instruments used, tempo, etc. We will also be practising for our Christmas Past and Present concert which we are performing at the Walsall Arena in November.
