Autumn 1

Religious Education (R.E.)

Our RE learning begins with learning about our school saint: St Joseph, and our new Class Saints: St Bernadette and Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto.

We will be learning about creation, focussing particularly on Moses, Abraham and their covenants with God.

Reading into Writing

In Reading into Writing this half term, we are completing lessons on basic writing skills to remind us how to use these in our sentences. We will also be reading the novel The 1000 Year Old Boy and will be answering comprehension questions based on these.

Writing

In writing, we are also focussing on The 1000 Year Old Boy, writing an adventure narrative using the skills we’ve learnt in the punctuation and grammar lessons.

We will then be writing a narrative using a media clip.

Maths

Our Maths this half-term will predominantly focus on the place value of number, recognising tenths and hundredths within a decimal and working on addition and subtraction.

It is still crucial that children keep on top of their times tables knowledge, so regular practise on TT Rockstars is essential. Copies of all times tables can be found at the back of the pupil planner.

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar

Year 5 words can be found at the back of the pupil planner – it is essential that the children know how to spell these.

Spelling focus this half term: -able/-ible, ie words, silent letters, homophones, -ant/-ent, -ence/-ance.

Science

In Science, we are learning about separating mixtures. We will learn what makes a solution and a mixture, how these components can be separated and why some mixtures are reversible and some are not.

Geography

In Geography we will be learning all about the world’s different biomes. We will look at what a biome is and research the main six in more detail. We will also consider the damage that can occur to an ecosystem and a biome, as well as how we can protect and preserve them.

French

During his half term the children will be learning about  noun gender, article-noun agreement and adjective placement while exploring monster and body part vocabulary; identifying key facts using cognates and other language detective skills;. They will create their own French Fantastical Beast.

Computing

Systems and searching: The children will develop their understanding of computer systems and how information is transferred between systems and devices. They consider small-scale as well as large-scale systems. They explain the input, output, and process aspects of a variety of different real-world systems. They discover how information is found on the World Wide Web, through learning how search engines work and what influences searching, and through comparing different search engines.

Physical Education (P.E.)

Children will need their PE kit in school on Mondays and Wednesdays: red round-necked PE top, navy shorts, plain black pumps.

This half term in PE we are studying football and netball. We are working on team skills, balance, communication and following rules.

Music

In Music this half term we focus on class performance. We explore the music of famous composers including Beethoven and Bach and look at the impact of music on society and vice versa through music.

Art

In Art, we will explore typography design and how we can create their own fonts and designs. We will explore how we can use visual letters and other elements to help convey ideas and emotions. They are introduced to the work of an artist and a designer who have both used lettering combined with maps to produce maps which tell stories. Children then go on to create their own visual and often three-dimensional maps.

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)

In PSHE, we learn about rules, rights and responsibilities with a particular emphasis on British Values. We conduct elections for our representatives in school and also think about the life of Martin Luther King Jnr during Black History Month. We also think about how we stay safe online.
