Science –  States of Matter (Chemistry)

In this unit, we will be learning about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. They will compare and group solids, liquids and gases. They will look closely at how states of matter change from solid to liquid and liquid to gas. They will explore the Water Cycle and learn all about the scientist Lord Kelvin

Geography – Where does our food come from?

This term, Year 4 will be learning about where our food comes from and the journey it takes from farm to fork. The children will explore farming in the UK and around the world, discovering how different climates affect what can be grown. They will learn about seasonal food, imports and exports, food miles and how transportation impacts the environment, while also considering how our food choices can support local farmers and communities.

Physical Education (P.E.)

Children will need their PE kit in school on Wednesdays and Fridays: red round-necked PE top, navy shorts, plain black pumps.

This half term in PE we are studying dance, and tennis.

We are working on skills including: balance, coordination, teamwork, following a routine and memorising rules and steps as well as learning to strike a ball to beat an opponent.

Computing – Programming B – Repetition in Games

This unit explores the concept of repetition in programming using the Scratch environment. It begins with a Scratch activity similar to that carried out in Logo in Programming unit A, where learners can discover similarities between two environments. Learners look at the difference between count-controlled and infinite loops, and use their knowledge to modify existing animations and games using repetition. Their final project is to design and create a game which uses repetition, applying stages of programming design throughout.

French – Food

French food, cafés, ordering and menus -‘Yum Yum’- or  ‘Miam, Miam’ !

This half term the children will be introduced to food vocabulary and they will revise numbers to 100, this time in the context of money and prices. This topic will encourage the children to develop their language detective skills and confidence with practical conversational French.

Personal,  Social & Health Education (PSHE)

This term the children will explore and learn:

  • That emotions change as they grow up
  • About the range and intensity of their feelings and that ‘feelings’ are not good guides for action
  • That feelings are neither good or bad, but information about what we are experiencing that help us consider how to act
  • What ‘emotional well-being’ means and that positive actions and talking to trusted people enhance emotional well-being
  • To recognise that images in the media do not always reflect reality and can affect how people feel about themselves.
  • That God made us and loves us as we are.
  • Some behaviour is wrong, unacceptable, unhealthy and/or risky.
  • Thankfulness builds resilience against feelings of envy, inadequacy, and insecurity, and against pressure from peers and the media

Design and Technology –  Simple circuits and switches

In our DT learning the children will:

  • Discuss and look at battery powered products
  • Investigate different types of switches
  • Recap circuits, looking at input and output components
  • Design a torch or lighthouse using a simple circuit
  • Make product
  • Evaluate product
