Autumn 1
Religious Education (R.E.) –
We will start the year by learning about our school patron saint – St. Joseph and our class saints: St Peter and St. Josephine Bhakita.
Our first RE unit focusses on ‘Creation and the Story of Abraham to Joseph’. We will learn the story of Creation in detail, consider what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God and study some of the stories from the Old Testament.
Next we think about ‘Jesus Teaches us how to pray.’ In this unit the children will learn about the prayer life of Jesus as he grew up in the Jewish faith. The children will be introduced to some prayers from the Old Testament and they will consider the importance Jesus attached to prayer. The children will study the Our Father, the prayer of the Rosary and some other forms of prayer as part of this unit.
Reading Into Writing –
This half term we will begin by reading Michael Morpurgo’s “The Giant’s Necklace.”
In our writing we will focus on grammar and writing setting descriptions based on the beautiful pictures in the book.
We will then begin to read “Who Let the Gods Out” by Maz Evans.
In our Writing we will be exploring narrative writing by retelling parts of our text with a focus on the sentence structures including: Expanded noun phrases, Conjunctions, Fronted Adverbials and Speech
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar
We will be learning and practising homophones and the letter patterns ei, sc, gue/que and ch.
Week 1: mail, male, flour, flower, berry, bury, great, grate, plain, plane
Week 2: vein, neighbour, weigh, eight, they, obey, grey, reindeer, beige, veil
Week 3: science, scene, discipline, fascinate, crescent, fascination, scenery, ascend, descent, scissors

Week 5: chef, chalet, machine, brochure, parachute, champagne, chute, moustache, quiche, crochet
Week 6: scheme, chorus, chemist, echo, character, ache, anchor, monarch, stomach, mechanic
Maths –
Addition and Subtraction We begin the year with a “Review of column addition and subtraction.”
Numbers to 10 000 We will then explore “Numbers to 10,000” and develop our understanding of the place value of number.
KIRF: I know Number bonds of 100 Number bonds show us how numbers join together. They are very important for addition and subtraction. This half term, the children will be learning number bonds of 100; they should be able to recall these independently.
Multiplication Tables The children will be practising all timestables with a view to building their confidence and expertise in readiness for their Multiplication Tables Check in May 2026
Science – Ecosystems
Our Science for this half term is 'Ecosystems'. Children will be learning about what an ecosystem is and how to classify the diets of animals. They will learn how to construct and interpret a food chain/web as well as understand what can cause disruptions to them.
History - The Ancient Greeks.
This half term we are learning all about Ancient Greece. We will be exploring the city-states, government, battles, beliefs and key figures such as Alexander the Great.
Physical Education (P.E.)
Children will need their PE kit in school on Mondays and Fridays: red round-necked PE top, navy shorts, plain black pumps. This half term in PE we are studying invasion games focusing on football and basketball. Children will develop skills such as passing, shooting and dribbling in isolation and progress into small sided games with an emphasis placed on teamwork, understanding of the games rules and demonstrating good sporting values.
French – Portraits
This half term the children will be learning adjectives for describing people’s physical appearance and their personality. Creating simple sentences ensuring that the adjectives agree with the gender of the noun. They will look at various artists and famous art galleries in France.
Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)
During PSHE this half term we will be focusing on: Class rules, Our school mission statement, British values, Understanding Catholic social teaching about family and community, Keeping safe online, The celebration of Harvest where we give thanks for food we eat, How to care for the world we live in and our environment, The positive contributions made by significant black people through History.
Computing – Computing systems and networks
The Internet Learners will apply their knowledge and understanding of networks, to appreciate the internet as a network of networks which need to be kept secure. They will learn that the World Wide Web is part of the internet, and will be given opportunities to explore the World Wide Web for themselves in order to learn about who owns content and what they can access, add, and create. Finally, they will evaluate online content to decide how honest, accurate, or reliable it is, and understand the consequences of false information.
Art / DT
Out Art project for this half term is creating decorative tiles.
Music
We are working at developing our confidence with playing solo sections from pieces of music.
