Pupil Premium
The Pupil premium is extra funding the school can receive to support children's education. At St Joseph’s we use the extra funding to provide pupils with fair and equal opportunities so that they achieve well in all areas of the school.
Our aim is to provide first class education and to develop the potential of all pupils in our care.
Our School Mission:
'Guided by Jesus, Learning Together, Striving for Excellence.'
Introduced in April 2011, the Pupil Premium is a Government initiative that provides additional funding aimed at pupils from deprived backgrounds.
Research shows that pupils from deprived backgrounds underachieve compared to their non‐deprived peers. The Pupil Premium is provided in order to support these pupils in reaching their potential by accelerating their progress.
The Government has used pupils entitled to Free School Meals and those who are looked after as an indicator for deprivation. They have given a fixed amount of money to schools per pupil, based on the number of pupils registered for Free School Meals and who are looked after by the local authority.
A premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. This service premium is designed to address the academic, emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils.
Barriers to Learning
The main barriers to educational achievement faced by eligible pupils at St Joseph’s school are:
Early language and communication development
The children come from disadvantaged families or where there has been marital breakdown
Reduced income - limited access to additional resources such as technology and additional clubs
Attendance and punctuality
Low self esteem - often as a result of one or more of the barriers identified above.
We, therefore, strive to target PP children and others to redress such barriers through engagement, resources, time, specific timely interventions and high expectations.
