Spellings for Autumn 2

Spellings are glued into planners on a Wednesday to be tested the following Wednesday. Please encourage the children to learn the letter patterns and practise their handwriting at the same time.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading this half term, we are studying the novel Matilda. We will be looking at characters and inference in the book, but also answering comprehension questions based on these using our VIPERS scheme. Our main focus this half term is vocabulary and inference.

In our maths lessons this half term we are learning about:

  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division

In Year 4, we work very hard on learning our times tables ready for the multiplication check in the summer term. So, it is very important that we know every times table fact fluently.

Our times tables for Autumn 2 are: 6x.

In Science, we are studying Electricity. The children are learning about the components of an electrical circuit, drawing and recognising them as well as knowing what insulators and conductors are.

In Geography, we are learning all about Migration and Hemispheres & Tropics. We will look at the different types of migration, why people migrate, what an emigrant and an immigrant is and the effects of climate change. We will also be learning about the earth’s hemispheres, tropics and comparing the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as looking at time zones around the world.

We will be learning how to recognise and use vocabulary related to clothing, to add adjectives and adjust this according to gender, to understand adjectival position and agreement for gender and number, to express an opinion (like/dislike), to describe an outfit using adjectives correctly.

Created and Loved by God is our PSHE unit for this half term, as well as looking at anti-bullying. This unit explores the individual and helps us understand that we are made in the image and likeness of God, it helps children to develop an understanding of the importance of valuing themselves as the basis for personal relationships.

We will learning how to make a moving object using our knowledge of electrical currents from Science.

Live and recorded music will be played to

the class. They will be asked to recall details of the performance they have just heard, to include instruments used, tempo, etc.

Editing audio: we will learn how to record sounds, create a podcast and then edit it using software.
