Year 4 National Curriculum
In Year 4, the children will study :
Autumn 1 - Sound - The children will be learning about how sound is made and recognise how sound travels to the ear. Using a variety of investigations, they will find patterns between the pitch of a sound, find patterns between the volume of a sound and recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases. They will make their own string telephones and complete a STEM activity where the children will make their own musical instruments. They will be learning about the scientist Alexander Graham Bell.
Autumn 2 - States of Matter - The children will be looking at solids, liquids and gases and observe what happens to materials when they are heated or cooled. Children will also learn about the water cycles and the parts played by evaporation and condensation.
Spring 1 - Living Things and their Habitat - The children will be learning about living things and how they can be grouped. They will be introduced to classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment. They will also recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things. They will also be learning about the work of David Attenborough.
Spring 2 - Animals including Humans - The children will be looking at the parts of the digestive system in humans and also identifying the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions. The children will make a model of the human teeth using card and marshmellows! Children will also construct and make a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey
Summer 1 - Electricity - The children will be looking at common appliances that run on electricity and constructing simple circuits. They will recognise the jobs of a switch, lamp, cells, wire, bulbs and batteries and recognise some common conductors and insulators. They will be learning about the scientist Garrett Morgan who worked on traffic lights.
Summer 2 - Scientists and Investigations - The children will be looking at a variety of scientists and completing investigations and experiments.
