Summer 1
Religious Education (R.E.)
In RE, we will be learning about Easter – thinking about Church’s Celebration of Easter through the Easter Vigil, the Church’s belief in eternal life through the Easter Story and the Story of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven.
We will then progress onto Pentecost, where the children will gain greater insight into the Church’s belief in the Holy Spirit. It will also explore the Christian belief in the Holy Trinity and prayer and devotion to the Holy Spirit.
Reading into Writing
In Reading into Writing this half term, we are reading the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. We will be writing a setting description, focussing on our use of commas for clarity and to avoid ambiguity, figurative language and using the five senses to describe.
We will be answering comprehension questions based on the novel using our VIPERS scheme, focussing particularly on retrieval, inference and vocabulary.
Maths
Our Maths this half term is based on percentages and geometry.

Year 5 words can be found at the back of the pupil planner – it is essential that the children know how to spell these.

Mental Maths
This half term we will focus on:
- Decimal addition
- Negative numbers
- Counting backwards in intervals of more than 1
Geography
In Geography, we are studying Europe. We will be using maps to locate countries, looking at weather and climate in Europe, human and physical features, cities and tourism.
Science
In Science, we are learning about the life cycles of plants. We will be looking at reproduction of plants, the different parts of a flower and how plants can be used.
Physical Education (P.E.)
Children will need their PE kit in school on Mondays and Fridays: red round-necked PE top, navy shorts, plain black pumps.
This half term in PE, Year 5 are doing cricket and rounders.
Music
In Music this half term we will be practising our exam pieces ready for our exam in summer 2.
Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)
Our PSHE learning this half term is focussed around being created and loved by God. This will focus on the Holy Trinity and the Catholic Social Teaching value of dignity of work. We will also put our faith into action by preparing our school grounds for their summer flowers.
Art
In Art this half term, we are looking at set design. Our final project will be to make our own set using a show box and other craft items.
Computing
Selection in Quizzing: pupils develop their knowledge of selection by revisiting the ‘If… Then… Else…’ structure. They represent this understanding in algorithms and then by constructing programs using the Scratch programming environment. They use their knowledge of writing programs and using selection to control outcomes to design a quiz in response to a given task and implement it as a program.
