Autumn 2

Writing

In our English lessons, we will read different texts and then write simple sentences about them. Each sentence will begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

Religious Education (R.E.)

Prayer- This unit is designed to develop the children’s understanding of prayer as a special way of spending time with God. In the unit the children will also explore the vocabulary, actions, places and aids associated with prayer, with particular reference to the prayer of praise and intercession. The children will also explore how Christians give praise to God in the psalms and in prayers like the “Glory Be To The Father” and the “Our Father”.

Advent- This unit is designed to develop the children’s understanding of Advent as a time of waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus and his coming again. The unit also develops the children’s understanding of Advent as a joyful liturgical season and allows them to participate in a special liturgy.

Maths

In Maths, we’re focusing on numbers 0 to 10, helping the children recognise, count, and understand these foundational numbers. We’ll also explore 2D and 3D shapes by identifying, composing, decomposing, and manipulating them through hands-on activities. This builds confidence with shapes, patterns, and spatial awareness in a fun, engaging way. Secondly, we will be looking at addictive structurers in maths.

History- Local History

In this Local History topic, children will explore the history of Darlaston and how it has changed over time. They will learn about important local landmarks, people, and industries, comparing past and present life. Pupils will develop a sense of pride, belonging, and understanding of their community’s heritage and identity.

Science – The Human Body

In Year 1 Science, the children will learn to name and identify main parts of the human body such as the head, arms, legs, hands, feet, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. They will explore how these parts help us move, see, hear, smell, taste, and touch, developing awareness of personal health and growth.

Physical Education (P.E.)

Children will need their PE kit in school on Wednesday and Friday.

Personal,  Social & Health Education (PSHE) –

In PSHE this term, children will explore several important themes that help them develop as kind, respectful, and responsible members of the community.

  • They will learn about Rules, Rights, and Responsibilities, understanding why rules are important at home, in school, and in society, and how everyone has a right to be treated fairly. Through Keeping Safe Online, children will learn how to use the internet responsibly, protect personal information, and seek help if they feel unsafe.

  • They will also explore British Values, including democracy, respect, tolerance, and the rule of law, learning how these values shape our society. As part of our CAFOD Live Simply focus, pupils will reflect on how to care for others and the environment, thinking about simple ways to live sustainably and help those in need.

  • In this topic, children will learn about the importance of Remembrance Day and why it is a special time to honour and remember those who have served and sacrificed in wars and conflicts. They will discuss the symbolism of the poppy and understand why people wear it as a sign of respect and remembrance.

  • During Anti-Bullying Week, the focus will be on the theme ‘Choose Respect’ and celebrating that ‘We are all different and amazing’. Children will look at pictures of school children from across the country and discuss what they notice about them — exploring similarities, differences, and the things that make each person unique.

  • On Culture Day, pupils are invited to come to school in their own clothes, reflecting their cultural heritage, such as national dress or colours of their country’s flag. This celebration encourages children to take pride in their identity and learn about the diversity within their school community.

The day links to CST – Dignity of the Human Person, helping children understand that every person is valuable and deserves respect. It also reflects the British Value of Tolerance, promoting acceptance and appreciation of different traditions and beliefs.

Music

In this music topic, children will explore a wider range of musical notes and have the opportunity to play different instruments. They will begin to follow directions and signals during performances, developing their listening skills, teamwork, and confidence when making music together.

Computing – Digit Art

In this Computing unit, children will explore digital painting using simple art software. They will learn how to choose and use different tools, colours, and brush effects to create pictures on a computer. Pupils will compare digital art with traditional painting, developing creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence using technology.

Phonics-

In class, children will be looking at our set 2 and 3 sounds. Groups and phonics books are set accordingly to ability.
