Our Learning in Spring 2
Reading into Writing – We will be reading and studying the book ‘Oliver Twist. Children will look at the themes and characters of the book and answer questions based on these. We will be using our ‘VIPERS’ scheme and look at questions based on retrieval, inference, prediction and vocabulary. Children will build up their comprehension, retrieval and inference skills in these lessons
Writing – In English this term, we are studying 'Oliver Twist'. We will be rewriting the workhouse scene when Oliver asks for more food from the famous book by Charles Dickens. The children will need to focus on setting descriptions, setting the correct atmosphere, describing characters and using speech to move their story on. They will also be writing a character description for Fagin.
Maths – In Maths we are focusing on Area and Perimeter, Geometry and Position and Movement. Children will also continue to practise their arithmetic skills by using 'Fluent in 5' in every maths lesson, with a focus on times tables, addition and subtraction, etc. It is important that the children know all of their times tables as this will help them in all lessons.
Religious Education (R.E.) – In RE, we will be looking at Lent and Holy Week. We will be focusing on the actions and true meaning of Lent and looking in detail at the events of Holy Week. We will focus on Jesus' suffering the in the Garden of Gethsemane, the true meaning of the word sacrifice and symbols to represent Holy week.

We will have a spelling pre-test on a Monday
We will have a spelling test on a Friday.

Mental Maths -
This half term, we will focus on:
• Fractions
• Short division and Long Division
• Long Multiplication
• Adding and subtracting fractions
• Decimals
• Percentages
• Measurements
Mental maths will be taught through the use of mental maths sessions, daily use of Freckle and ‘Fluent in 5 ’ sessions where the children will focus on arithmetic style questions.
Geography - In Geography, we will start to look at Globalisation. We will look at what globalisation is, how globalisation affects different countries, looking at how shipping containers help the transport of goods and whether the internet has helped or hindered trade and globalisation.
Science – In Science, the children will be learning about ‘Light’
In this unit, we will be learning:
1. What is light and where does it come from?
2. What is reflection and how can we use it?
3. What is refraction and how can we use it?
4. How do we see light?
5. Where do different colours come from?
Computing – This term, we are looking at Data and information - Introduction to Spreadsheets
This unit introduces the learners to spreadsheets. They will be supported in organising data into columns and rows to create their own data set. Learners will be taught the importance of formatting data to support calculations, while also being introduced to formulas and will begin to understand how they can be used to produce calculated data. Learners will be taught how to apply formulas that include a range of cells, and apply formulas to multiple cells by duplicating them. Learners will use spreadsheets to plan an event and answer questions. Finally, learners will create charts, and evaluate their results in comparison to questions asked.
French – In French this half term, the children will be focusing on the following topics:
This half term the children will continue to learn to use a combination of present and near-future tenses, and become familiar with holiday-related vocabulary around packing a suitcase and planning a journey. They will explore which countries they might visit and why and ultimately research and plan a holiday to France.

Music – In Music this half term, the children will be focusing on composition using a full range of chromatic notes taught for the first time. Structure will be relaxed, giving the student more freedom to express music ideas and influences.
Physical Education (P.E.) – In PE this half term, the children will be focusing on Tennis and Badminton. They will learn the importance of playing in team games and the skills required for each sport.
