Summer 1

During the Summer 1 half term, this is what we will be learning in Year 3

Religious Education (R.E.) – During this half term we will be learning more about the events that took place involving Jesus after His resurrection. We will look at the stories of the Road to Emmaus and the Breakfast on the Shore.

We will deepen our understanding of the reaction of the Apostles when Jesus shows himself to the again and the impact this has on them all.

We then move on to think about the presence of the Risen Christ at Mass and during the Eucharist – this giving Jesus’ followers the opportunity to meet Him today and build God’s kingdom on earth.

Writing – The focus book for our writing this half term will be The Egyptian Cinderella by author Shirley Climo. We will be writing setting descriptions about Egypt and Greece. We will be developing our skills in using different writing features including; use of correct tense, expanded noun phrases to describe, co-ordinating Conjunctions – and, but, or, so, subordinating Conjunctions - when, if, because, emotional language; use of feelings, sensory description and also editing and improving work, to make our writing as detailed and descriptive as we can.

Whole class reading

As well as using The Egyptian Cinderella as the book for our writing focus, we will also use it to help us work on developing our comprehension skills by focusing on Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation and Summarising.

Maths – This half term the children will be focussing on a week ‘top up’ revision of column subtraction, this will be followed up by completing our half term with learning about reading and understanding time. We will be focussing upon using manipulatives to deepen our understanding and using these to have a strong understanding of these important elements of real life maths – please feel free to support this learning at home wherever possible.

Mental Maths - This half term we will continue looking at:

  • continuing counting backwards from a number.
  • continue our understanding of multiplication and division facts linked to the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
  • Embedding a fluent knowledge of all number bonds to 10 and to 20 by using hand held as well as online RekenReks (available on Polypad – it’s free if you want to check it out with your child.

Our focus is on knowing and calculating these facts with speed and accuracy to develop fluency. Please help your child to practise these at home.

History – this half term we will be taking a closer look at the ancient World – in particular ancient Egypt. We will look at different regions and areas of this fascinating country and delve deeper into the historical customs of the ancient Egyptians.

Science – This half term we will be learning about light and shadow. We will investigate why it is necessary we need light to be able to see. We will then look at different light sources; natural and man-made. The children will also look at more scientific vocabulary e.g. opaque, transparent and translucent, before finishing the topic investigating shadows and their causes.

Physical Education (P.E.) This half term the children will have PE on Mondays and Tuesdays. Children will need kit both days to participate in lessons with Mr Davies.

This half term the children will be participating in cricket and tag rugby. These will help the children to develop skills in both individual disciplines as well as being part of a team.

Computing – During this unit, the children will become familiar with the terms ‘text’ and ‘images’ and understand that they can be used to communicate messages. They will use desktop publishing software and consider careful choices of font size, colour and type to edit and improve premade documents. Learners will be introduced to the terms ‘templates’, ‘orientation’, and ‘placeholders’ and begin to understand how these can support them in making their own template for a magazine front cover. They will start to add text and images to create their own pieces of work using desktop publishing software. Learners will look at a range of page layouts thinking carefully about the purpose of these and evaluate how and why desktop publishing is used in the real world.

Art - In our Art lessons the children will be learning about two artists; Hannah Rae and Alice Kettle. We will explore using colour and ‘mark making’ within our own work, seeing how this develops the depth of our piece. To further develop out work, we will be using simple stitch work to create a textual marks over our canvas. We will then evaluate what went well in our artwork and what was more difficult.

Music – Classes will prepare a repertoire of pieces for the London College   Examination and assessment. Harmonies will be introduced to previously taught repertoire and children encouraged to challenge themselves to achieve the best possible performance.
