Our Learning in Summer 1

 

Reading into Writing – In English this term, we will be reading and studying the book ‘Wonder.’  Children will look at the themes and characters of the book and answer questions based on these. We will be using our ‘VIPERS’ scheme and look at questions based on retrieval, inference, prediction and vocabulary. Children will build up their comprehension, retrieval and inference skills in these lessons

 

Writing -  For our writing lessons, the children will be writing in a variety of different styles including:

 

  • Retell of a classic fairy-tale story
  • Character description
  • Non-chronological report
  • Poetry
  • Letter

 

 

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar – This term, we will be revising ready for our SATs. We will be looking at word types, sentence types, modal verbs, punctuation and spellings. We will be looking at past papers and completing CGP activities.

 

Spellings

We will have a spelling test on a Friday.

The spellings for each week will be glued in your child’s planner at the start of each term:

 Week 1 – homophones and near homophones

Week 2 – common exception words

Week 3 – Year 5 and 6 words

Week 4 – Year 5 and 6 words

Maths – In Maths we are focusing on angles, geometry, translation, reflection of shapes and co-ordinates. We will also be focusing lots on revision as the children sit their SATs during this term. We will look back at work from the curriculum throughout the key stage and work lots on our arithmetic skills. Children will also continue to practise their arithmetic skills by using Fluent in 5 in every maths lesson, with a focus on times tables, addition and subtraction, etc. It is important that the children know all of their times tables as this will help them in all lessons.

 

Mental Maths -

This half term, we will focus on:

  •  Fractions
  • Short division and Long Division
  • Long Multiplication
  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Decimals
  •  Percentages
  • Measurements

 

Mental maths will be taught through the use of mental maths sessions, daily use of Freckle and ‘Fluent in 5’ sessions where the children will focus on arithmetic style questions.

 

Religious Education (R.E.) – In RE, we will be looking at Easter and Pentecost. We will be focusing on the actions of the disciples after Jesus' Resurrection.

 

Geography - In Geography, we are continuing our unit from Spring 2 - Globalisation. We will look further into where our clothes come from and what impact this has on trade and the economy. We will look at how globalisation affects food, where globalisation will lead us in the future and self-evaluate and look at how globalised our own lives are.

 

Science – In Science, the children will be learning about ‘ Diet and Lifestyle. The children will be looking at what makes a healthy lifestyle, why different people need different lifestyles and the effect exercise has on the muscles. We will also be looking at the circulatory system and the effect drugs, nicotine and alcohol has on our bodies.

 

 

ComputingIn Computing this half term, children will be looking at Creating media – 3D Modelling.

Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of using a computer to produce 3D models.

 Learners will initially familiarise themselves with working in a 3D space, moving, resizing, and duplicating objects. They will then create hollow objects using placeholders and combine multiple objects to create a model of a desk tidy.

 Finally, learners will examine the benefits of grouping and ungrouping 3D objects, then go on to plan, develop, and evaluate their own 3D model of a building.

 

 

French – In French this term, the children will be learning: Sport

Pupils conjugate the verb ‘aller’- to go, identify correct prepositions, learn sports vocabulary, how to express preferences plus the infinitive. They expand their knowledge of country names and develop their cultural knowledge of Pétanque, the Tour de France and the Olympics, consolidating their learning by writing a magazine article about participating in the Olympic Games.

 

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) – In PSHE this half term, the children will be following the Life to the Full scheme. They will be completing the following units:

 

  • LTTF: Created to love others
  • Keeping safe   
  • Money Sense   
  • British Values   

 

 

Music – In preparing for Level ¾ LCM Ensemble Examination, classes will produce and demonstrate excellent ensemble skills, listening and evaluating their performance throughout. (NQF AS Level). 

 

Physical Education (P.E.) – In PE this half term, the children will be focusing on cricket, multi-skills and leadership. They will be focusing on how to work in a team and using a certain amount of skills.
