Year 3 Curriculum Overview for Parents Summer 2 2025
What will your child be learning this half term?
Whole class reading – As well as using Ted Hughes’ classic tale, The Iron Man as the book for our writing focus, we will also use it to help us work on developing our comprehension skills by focusing on Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation and Summarising.
| Religious Education (R.E.) – During this half term we will be learning more about Pentecost and the impact the Holy Spirit has over the Apostles when Jesus is no longer with them in person. We will complete our studies in Year 3 with deepening the understanding of the Mass and also our role in sharing in the life of Christ.

Writing – The focus book for our writing this half term will be The Iron Man by author Ted Hughes. We will be writing a newspaper article about the fear that the people have with the unwanted visitor. We will be developing our skills in using different writing features including; use of adjectives and nouns, use of adventurous and exciting vocabulary, using formal writing style, expanded noun phrases, co-ordinating Conjunctions – and, but, or, so, subordinating Conjunctions - when, if, because, similes, editing and improving work, conjunctions of time the children will also be editing and improving work, to make the writing as detailed and descriptive as we can.
| Maths – This half term the children will be focussing on the children’s understanding and application of column addition and subtraction, this will lead on to working out more complex word problems. Later in the term, we will have a real focus on developing multiplication and division understanding. We will be focussing upon using manipulatives to deepen our understanding and using these to have a strong understanding of these important elements of real life maths – please feel free to support this learning at home wherever possible.

Physical Education (P.E.) This half term the children will have PE on Mondays and Tuesdays. Children will need kit both days to participate in lessons with Mr Davies. This half term the children will be participating in athletics and ‘kickball’ rounders, as well as preparing for the annual sports day. These will help the children to develop skills in both individual disciplines as well as being part of a team.

Our focus is on knowing and calculating these facts with speed and accuracy to develop fluency. Please help your child to practise these at home.

Geography - This half term we will studying rivers. The children will look at where they ate found and the evolution of how rivers impact upon the landscape. We will also look at the causes of flooding and the impacts these floods create both locally and wider ranging. The children will then look at river in the UK and look at the importance of these to both towns as well as wildlife.
| Science – This half term we will be learning about rocks and soil. We will be exploring the physical properties of rocks, their uses and how they weather and erode over time. We will then move on to look at fossils and how they are formed. We will end the unit looking at those scientists who study rocks and a little more about what they do to help us understand more about the world.

D&T During this half term, the children will research shell structures and then design, decorate and make their own. This shell will turn into a box which will be strong enough to be able to hold a small chocolate or some sweets – which the children will then take home.
| French Clothes - the children will learn different language to describe items of clothing, along with the different forms of the indefinite article. They will create and describe their own clothes design. |
PSHE This half term in PSHE, the children will focus on the Church’s idea of love, family and how this links to the love of the Holy Trinity and the Catholic Social Teachings of ‘The Common Good’. We also look at the Catholic Social Teaching of ‘The Dignity of Work’ – exploring how we work for others and how others work for us. Key questions arising here will be discussed, including what is work? How does it differ from other activities? Can work also be fun? Is work enjoyable or something you have to do? The children will then come up with ideas of who helps them in school and how they can show appreciation for this.
| Music A London College of Music Ensemble Examination will be taken. Children will also be invited to perform in concerts in and out of the school setting. KS2 children will be invited to perform as part of an area steel band |
Computing During this unit explores the links between events and actions, whilst consolidating prior learning relating to sequencing. The children will begin by moving a sprite in four directions (up, down, left and right). They will then explore movement within the context of a maze, using design to choose an appropriately sized sprite. This unit also introduces programming extensions, through the use of pen blocks. Learners are given the opportunity to draw lines with sprites and change the size and colour of lines. The unit concludes with learners designing and coding their own maze tracing program. |

Additional important information |
Homework in Year 3 · Children are expected to read every day for 15 - 20 minutes – please sign your child’s planner and feel free to add a comment after completing this reading time together. · Mental Maths – we will be focussing on our 3, 4 and 8x tables, using rekenreks to master number bonds within 20 (have a look at the online resource Polpad that the children have used for amazing interactive resources), as well as working on counting backwards from a number.
