Summer 2

Our Learning in Summer 2

 

Reading into Writing – In English this term, we will continue looking at persuasive writing and writing a brochure persuading someone to go on our residential to Whitemoor Lakes.

We will also be reading the book ‘Wonder’ and writing a balanced argument about home-schooling and a persuasive letter.

 

Religious Education (R.E.) – In RE, we will be looking at Pentecost. We will be focusing on the actions of the disciples after Jesus' Resurrection. We will also be looking at Prayers in the Lives of followers of Christ. Finally, we will be researching other religions such as Judaism and Christianity.

 

Maths – In Maths we are focusing on negative numbers, translation, position of shapes and co-ordinates. We will also be completing lots of maths puzzles and applying our maths skills to everyday problems.

 

Mental Maths

This half term, we will focus on:

Fractions

Short division and Long Division

 Long Multiplication

 Adding and subtracting fractions

 Decimals

Percentages

Measurements

 

Mental maths will be taught through the use of mental maths sessions, TT Rock stars and ‘Fluent in 5’ sessions where the children will focus on arithmetic style questions.

 

History - In History, we are looking at WW2 and how this war began. We will also be looking at the local history in Walsall

 

In this unit, we will be learning:

Introduction to WW2

WW2 timeline of Walsall

Evacuation and Walsall

Manufacturing maps of Walsall

Blitz and air raids on Walsall

End of War and VE day celebrations

 

Science – In Science, the children will be learning about Electricity.

 

In this unit, we will be learning:

Recap electricity and circuits

The history of electricity

Electrical symbols and draw circuits

Brightness of bulbs investigation

Scientist – Nikola Tesla

 

 

ComputingIn Computing this half term, children will be looking at Programming B - Sensing movement.

This unit is the final KS2 programming unit and brings together elements of all the four programming constructs: sequence from Year 3, repetition from Year 4, selection from Year 5, and variables (introduced in Year 6 – ‘Programming A’). It offers pupils the opportunity to use all of these constructs in a different, but still familiar environment, while also utilising a physical device — the micro:bit. The unit begins with a simple program for pupils to build in and test within the new programming environment, before transferring it to their micro:bit. Pupils then take on three new projects in Lessons 2, 3, and 4, with each lesson adding more depth.

 

French – In French this term, the children will be learning:

 

Visiting a French Town

 

The children will be learning directional, transport and town vocabulary together will prepositional phrases. The children will describe their journey to school.

They will also research and plan a visit to a French town

 

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) – In PSHE this half term, the children will be following the Life to the Full scheme. They will be completing the following units:

 

  • LTTF: Created to live in Community –  
  • Religious Understanding   
  • LTTF: Created to love others – Living in the wider world   
  • British Values   

 

Music – In music this half term, the children will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of live music performance, in and out of school.

Musicians from Year 6 will experience performing as part of an area band at raising confidence and self-esteem. 

They will also be completing their music exams this half term.

 

Physical Education (P.E.) – In PE this half term, the children will be focusing on Athletics and Rounders, as well as swimming lessons on a Tuesday. They will be learning rules, key skills and working well in a team. They will also be preparing for Sports Day activities.

 

Art – In art this half term, the children will be looking at Exploring Identity.

 

In this topic, children are introduced to artists who explore their identity within their art.

Pupils explore how artists use various aspects of their identity, creating imagery which explores many different aspects within one image by using layers and juxtaposition. Children listen to how the artists construct their work, before working physically in drawing and collage or digitally on a tablet to make their own layered and constructed portrait.
