Phonics-

In class, children will be looking at our set 3 sounds.

Groups and phonics books are set accordingly to ability.

 

During this half term, the Year 1 phonics screening test will take place.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Religious Education (R.E.) –

Sharing in Jesus’ life- This unit is designed to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the way in which, as Christians, we are called to share in the life of Jesus. The unit focuses on Jesus choosing and calling the disciples and how they are an example to us of what it means to be a disciple or follower of Jesus and share in his life.

 

Following Jesus- This unit is designed to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of what it means to follow Jesus today. The unit develops the children’s understanding of how, as followers of Jesus, we belong to the Church and the different ways that the Church, and the different members of it, follow Jesus.

Writing

This term in English, the children will be developing their writing skills by exploring a variety of text types. They will learn how to create vivid setting descriptions, helping readers imagine places and atmospheres using descriptive language. They will also work on character descriptions, focusing on how to bring characters to life through appearance, actions, and personality traits. In addition, the children will be introduced to non-fiction writing, where they will learn how to inform and explain using clear structure and factual language. This will include writing reports, fact files, or explanations linked to our History topic, helping to build cross-curricular connections and deepen their understanding.

 

Maths –

  • Overview of year- this includes addition, subtraction, division, times tables and time.
  • Mass- using balancing scales, the children will have a look to see what weights more and why.
  • Space and positons- the children will learning their left and right turns using dance, outdoor activities and robots.

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar –

  • This half term, we will be focusing on our capital letters, full stops, adjectives and conjunctions.
  • Conjunctions- and, but, so and because. Children are able to recall their conjunctions using the ‘conjunction’ song we have learnt at school.
  • Adjectives- words to describe nouns.
  • Suffixes and prefixes will be a focus this term to solidify learning.

 

 

Mental Maths –

  • Counting to 100
  • Counting in 10, 2 and 5.
  • Fractions ½, ¼ and wholes.
  • Time – o clock and half past.
  • Positions- left and right

History

This term in History, the children will be exploring how everyday life has changed over the past 60 years. We will focus on three key areas: music, toys, and food products. Children will investigate what these looked like in the past, how they have evolved, and what they are like today. This topic will help develop their understanding of change over time and how these changes reflect shifts in technology, culture, and lifestyles.

 

Science – Plants: Growth and Life Cycles (Year 2)

 

This term, the children will be learning about plants and how they grow. They will explore what plants need in order to survive, including water, light, air, and a suitable temperature. The children will observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants, and they will learn to identify and name common plants, including trees and flowering plants.

 

Through hands-on investigations and outdoor observations, children will compare different types of plants and notice how they change over time. They will also learn about the basic structure of plants, such as roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, and understand the important role plants play in our environment.

Physical Education (P.E.)

Children will need their PE kit in school on Wednesday and Friday. In PE, the children will be looking at tennis with Mr Davies. 

 

 

 

Personal,  Social & Health Education (PSHE) –

  • LTTF: Created to love others – Religious Understanding. LTTF: Created to love others – Personal relationships and British Values.
  • About what is and isn’t an emergency. We will be learning who to call in different emergencies.
  • God is love: Father, Son and Holy Spirit- the children will learning about being made in his image means being called to be loved and to love others.
  • To know what a community is, and that God calls us to live in community with one another and understand Jesus’ teaching on neighbours.
  • Medicines are drugs, but not all drugs are good for us. The children will be learning that our bodies are created by God, so we should take care of them and be careful about what we consume.

Music-

Cross-curricular links to art/technology in the form of making a music programme. A range of World Music instruments will be used. The children also have a sound workshop booked for this unit of learning.

Computing –

  • Online safety- how we stay safe on the internet.
  • This unit introduces learners to on-screen programming through Scratch Jr. Learners will explore the way a project looks by investigating sprites and backgrounds. They will use programming blocks to use, modify, and create programs. Learners will also be introduced to the early stages of program design through the introduction of algorithms.

 

Design and technology

In DT, the children will be making a fruit salad and tasting lots of new fruits. They will be evaluating their fruit salads at the end and taking them home to enjoy. Furthermore, we wil be visiting a fruit farm later this term so explore further how fruit grows and why it is healthy for our diets.
