Summer 2
Reading into Writing – In Reading into Writing this half term, we are reading the novel Holes. We will be writing a flashback story, focussing on our use of tense types and characterisation, and a non-chronological report, focussing on our use of conjunctions and fronted adverbials.
We will be answering comprehension questions based on the novel using our VIPERS scheme, focussing particularly on retrieval, inference and vocabulary.
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar –
Year 5 words can be found at the back of the pupil planner – it is essential that the children know how to spell these.
Week 1: technology, architect, chemotherapy, chrysalis, chronic, chemical, choir, chaos, character, orchestra

Religious Education (R.E.) – in RE, we will be learning about Pentecost, where the children will gain greater insight into the Church’s belief in the Holy Spirit. It will also explore the Christian belief in the Holy Trinity and prayer and devotion to the Holy Spirit.
We will then be looking at the work of the Apostles and understanding the Sacraments of Marriage and Holy Orders.
Maths –
Our Maths this half term is based on Position and Movement, Measurements, Area, Perimeter, Volume and Roman Numerals.
Mental Maths -
This half term we will focus on:
- Multiply and divide using times tables
- Multiply and divide by 10, 100, 1000
- Negative numbers
History - In History, we are learning about Ancient Maya – a culture from Mesoamerica. We will learn about their daily life, beliefs, culture, conflict and comparison to Anglo-Saxon Britain.
Science – In Science, we are learning about forces: friction, pushes and pulls, water resistance, air resistance, levers, pulleys and gears.
Physical Education (P.E.)
Children will need their PE kit in school on Mondays and Fridays: red round-necked PE top, navy shorts, plain black pumps.
This half term in PE, Year 5 are doing athletics and tag rugby.
Music – In Music this half term we will be practising our exam pieces ready for our exam and performance later this term.
Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) –
Our PSHE learning this half term is focussed around being created and loved by God. This will focus on the Holy Trinity and the Catholic Social Teaching value of dignity of work. We will also put our faith into action by planting flowers in our school grounds.
French – The French Speaking World
During this half-term the children will be discovering the many French speaking countries. They will also be learning directional vocabulary,
They will discuss the climate in these various countries using comparative language.
Computing – Flat-file databases: this unit looks at how a flat-file database can be used to organise data in records. Pupils use tools within a database to order and answer questions about data. They create graphs and charts from their data to help solve problems. They use a real-life database to answer a question, and present their work to others.
