Autumn 2

English

In English this term we are studying Explanation texts. Our text  "I was there 1066 The Norman Conquest" by Jim Eldridge and our History topic is our inspiration as we follow Talk For Writing to learn how explanation texts are created as we write an explanation of "How the Normans conquered Britain."

Spellings

Spellings are given to the children on a Friday morning and they practise them and discuss their meanings and spelling patterns. These are also glued into their planners so they can practise them at home as part of their homework. There is a spelling test each Friday. Children are encouraged to learning all spellings. 

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we are studying the book "The Wreck of the Zanzibar" by Michael Morpurgo. We are expanding our experience of descriptive diary writing from last half term and exploring characters and themes in the book. We read for meaning and answer comprehension questions based on these using our VIPERS scheme.

Maths

In Maths we are focusing on multiplication and division including multiplying by 2 digits and dividing with remainders. We are learning about Prime, Square and Cube numbers as well as solving word problems. We are also learning about tables and graphs and how to read the information contained in them.

 Timestables are an essential part of our Maths learning and daily practice is required to ensure we are able to multiply and divide effectively. We work on our tables in our Mental Maths sessions as well as exploring number and using real life situations.

Science

In Science, we are learning about Forces. This includes: exploring what forces are; finding about about Gravity; learning about Sir Isaac Newton; exploring air resistance, water resistance and friction.

History

In History this term, we are learning all about the Norman Conquest. We are finding about who was in line to take over the throne following the death of Edward the Confessor. We are learning about the events of 1066 and how William the Conqueror ruled, including his castle designs and his feudal systems. We are also looking at how Norman rule affects us today.
