English

 

In our English lessons we will be using the text 'The Iron Man'

We will have a fiction focus on setting descriptions and a non-fiction focus on informal letter writing. 

We will be learning about the following:

  • prepositional language
  • conjunctions
  • adjectives
  • empathetic language

Guided Reading

 

In Guided Reading, we are studying the book  'The Sheep Pig' by Dick King Smith  We will be looking at characters and themes in the book but also answering comprehension questions using our VIPERS scheme. 

Spellings

 

Ten weekly spellings are given to the children on a Monday. These are glued into their planners so they can practise them at home as part of their homework. There is a spelling test each Monday. Children are encouraged to learning all spellings. These include repeated practice of the Year 3 & 4 statutory spellings. 

Maths

 

In our maths lessons this half term we are learning about:

 

  • Mass
  • Money
  • Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs 
  • Quick recall of the  3, 4 and 8 & 9 times-tables (as well as the 2, 5, and 10 times-tables the children have already learned in Year 1 and 2)

This half term we will be completing a unit of work on 'Water, Weather & Climate' 

 

We be learning the following:

  • To know about the water on planet Earth and where it is stored. To know about the Water Cycle.
  • To understand what the weather is made of.
  • Differentiate between weather and climate
  • Read a weather forecast
  • To explain what causes rain to form
  • To explain  how mountains help cause rain.
  • Explore what a rain shadow is
  • To explain why the UK's weather can change daily.
  • To be able to explain what air mass is
  • Examine how the characteristics of the air mass affect the weather.
  • To be able to explain how the Sun sustains life on Earth
  • Review how the tilt of the Earth creates the seasons
  • Explore how the seasons are different in the different hemispheres
  • To be able to explain how climate differs in different parts of the world
  • Explain the ways in which the weather differs
  • Explore why the climate is changing
  • Examine How climate change is affecting the Earth
