Summer 2

English

In English, we are learning how to write narrative adventure stories and instruction writing based around selected chapters from "Middleworld" by J&P Voelkel.

Spellings

Spellings are given to the children on a Monday afternoon and they practise them and discuss their meanings and spelling patterns. These are also glued into their planners so they can practise them at home as part of their homework. There is a spelling test each Monday. Children are encouraged to learn all spellings.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we are studying the book "The Chocolate Tree" by Linda Lowery and Richard Keep. We are exploring the use of language in this Mayan Folktale and making links with our History. We read for meaning and answer comprehension questions based on these using our VIPERS scheme.

Maths

In Maths we are focusing on measurements, area and perimeter, volume and Roman numerals. We are continuing to practise our number skills in our Mental Maths lessons including timestables, fractions, decimals and percentages. We explore number and use real life situations to see the practical application of Maths in the real world. We use Freckle, TTRockStars and Numbots to support our learning as well.

Science

In this half term, our Science is centred around Scientists and Investigations. We explore germination and the growth of plants to consolidate our knowledge on lifecycles and we also explore air resistance by making parachutes of different sizes to see how this affects their descent. We also consider Eva Crane's work with bees and learn about the work of Stephen Hawking.

History

In History, we are learning about The Maya. We are learning about where they came from and what their daily lives were like. We think about their beliefs and Gods. We consider their achievements and contributions to the world as well as debate the reasons for their civilisation disappearing.
