Summer 1

English

In English, we are learning how to write narrative with flashback and non-chronological report writing about an animal. Our English is based around our Guided Reading text "Holes" by Louis Sachar.

Spellings

Spellings are given to the children on a Tuesday afternoon and they practise them and discuss their meanings and spelling patterns. These are also glued into their planners so they can practise them at home as part of their homework. There is a spelling test each Tuesday. Children are encouraged to learning all spellings.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we are studying the book "Holes" by Louis Sachar. We are exploring the characters and themes in the book as well as gaining an understanding the use of English in America. We read for meaning and answer comprehension questions based on these using our VIPERS scheme.

Maths

In Maths we are focusing on geometry, position and movement (co-ordinates), and measurements. We are continuing to practise our number skills in our Mental Maths lessons including timestables, fractions, decimals and percentages. We explore number and use real life situations to see the practical application of Maths in the real world. We use Freckle, TTRockStars and Numbots to support our learning as well.

Science

In Science, we are learning about Living Things in Their Habitats. This includes the life cycles of plants, insects, mammals and amphibians as well looking at the work of Jane Goodall.

Geography

In Geography, we are learning about Energy and Sustainability. We are learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources, how they are produced and the impact they have on us. The explore examples of how some parts of the world have innovated new technologies and ways of producing energy to have less impact on the planet, as well as considering what we can do in order to make where we live more sustainable.
