Summer 1

English

In our English lessons we will be using The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to write a portal story and a set of instructions. 

We are learning how to use description and dialogue in our writing as well as working on our handwriting to earn our pen licences!  

Spellings for Summer 1

Spellings are glued into planners on a Tuesday to be tested the following Tuesday. Please encourage the children to learn the letter patterns and practise their handwriting at the same time.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading this half term, we are studying the novel How To Train Your Dragon to link with our Anglo-Saxons History unit. We will be looking at characters and inference in the book, but also answering comprehension questions based on these using our VIPERS scheme. 

Maths

In our maths lessons this half term we are learning about:

• Time: 24-hour, 12-hour and conversions between hours, minutes and seconds.
• Decimals

In Year 4, we work very hard on learning our times tables ready for the multiplication check in the summer term. So, it is very important that we know every times table fact fluently.

Our times tables for Summer are: 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 12x.

TIMES TABLES CLUB IS AVAILABLE TO ALL YEAR 4 CHILDREN ON A WEDNESDAY 3:15-4:15PM.

Science

In Science, we are studying Electricity. The children are learning about how electricity travels, how to make simple circuits, how to decide whether a circuit will work or not and why and what conducts/insulates electricity.

History

In History, we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Vikings. We are looking at why they invaded, where they attacked from, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, daily life and how this fits onto a timeline.
